Day One Of The Sydney Masters

Day one of the Sydney Masters is over, and what an evening of darts it was. The tone of the night was set in the first game, as Melbourne-based Rhys Mathewson sensationally stunned world number 6 James Wade. Mathewson trailed 5-2 and produced a ‘Wade’ like comeback winning the last four to stun the third seed. Wade missed match darts in three of the last four legs, which was very out of charter for the world number 6 who is usually one of the best finishers in the business. The other seed to fall was Raymond van Barneveld, who was thrashed 6-1 by home favourite Kyle Anderson. Anderson has been one of the form players this season, as the big Aussie has broken into the top 32 in the world. If Anderson can carry on his great form, then he will be feared for the rest of the Sydney Masters.

16 times champion of the world Phil Taylor denied young sensation Corey Cadby a fairytale TV debut. The master beat the young Aussie 6-3, but Cadby showed that he could be a force in world darts. Cadby missed darts to take the score to 5-4 and was duly punished by Taylor. Cadby averaged nearly 93 on his TV debut, something that should give him plenty of confidence ahead of the Perth Masters. World champion Gary Anderson had something of an off night but was still too strong for David Platt. Anderson only averaged 79 and had a host of missed doubles, but was still a 6-3 winner.

World number one Michael van Gerwen had the performance of the night, as the Dutchman averaged 107.89 on his way to a comfortable 6-2 win over Cody Harris. Dave Chisnall made light work of Harley Kemp, averaging 93 on his way to a 6-1 victory. Adrian Lewis produces a solid performance in beating Rob Szabo, the former world champion running out -3 winner. On paper, Peter Wright has a tricky looking tie against former world finalist Simon Whitlock. Wright made light work of Whitlock, missing darts to whitewash the Aussie star. Wright would win the match 6-2 with a 99 average.
