After a thrilling day of darts in Blackpool, world number one Glen Durrant was crowned the Shownlights Winmau European Open champions 2016. Durrant has been in untouchable form on the BDO tour, adding yet another ranking event to his impressing haul in 2016. Durrant had the first two round very much his own way. In the last 32 he would come up against Barry Lynn, Lynn shot to darting fame at this year’s PDC UK Open. Lynn pushed the world number one the whole way, with Durrant winning a deciding leg to take a 4-3 victory.
In semi-final Durrant again showed his star quality, by edging out Brian Dawson in a nine leg thriller. Durrant averaged 29.47 holding his own throw in the deciding leg, to break Dawson’s heart. Final stages are becoming Durrant second home, as the rest of the BDO field try and chase him. Durrant would face Mark McGeeney in the final after McGeeney beat Pip Blackwell in his semi-final. In a final, that would have everyone on the edge of their seats. McGeeney would throw everything at Durrant, but it just wasn’t enough. Durrant would again average high 29s to take home the title.
With the world number one in such good form, I can’t wait for him to pit his wits against the PDC stars in the Grand Slam of Darts in November. Without putting words in Durrant’s mouth, but I would love to see him on the PDC circuit. And follow in the footsteps of Stephen Bunting, by winning Lakeside then making the leap.
